SGS Cologne Whole School

On Friday 25th November the Music Department of St. George’s School were very proud to host, for the first time, the ABRSM Music Instrumental Examinations. ABRSM are the examination board for the Royal School of Music and the world’s leading provider of music examinations. We are very grateful to the Handel Music Academy, run by Yoo Soon Lee and Teemu Myöhänen and who provide us with high quality instrumental teachers, for their hard work over this last year to arrange for St. George’s to be a centre of the ABRSM examinations.

The ABRSM exams are graded from 1 to 8, with grade 8 serving as the highest level examination. For each exam grade pupils must prepare three contrasting pieces for performance, be able to sight-read a given piece, and undertake an aural test.

Pupils who take Music IGCSE or IB are expected to give a performance as part of the course. The examination boards use the ABRSM grading system as a guide to the level pupils should be performing at. Pupils at the end of the IGCSE course should be able to perform to grade 4-5 and for IB grade 6-7. Friday saw six pupils from St George’s sit their exams.

The pupils have worked very hard in preparing for their examination and we wish them the very best of luck with the results! It is wonderful to have such musicians here who help enrich the cultural life of the school! We very much hope that this will become a fixed event whereby each year St. George’s School becomes a centre for the ABRSM examinations and it encourages more pupils to learn a musical instrument!
