Early Years Curriculum

Our Early Years Department encompasses the age range 4-7 years, and the year groups Reception, Year 1 and Year 2.

During this exciting time, our pupils start to explore and discover the world in more depth, and begin to develop key knowledge and skills that will accompany them on their learning journey. Burgeoning skills in literacy and numeracy are harnessed and developed at the core of the curriculum, and enhanced by exploration of a stimulating range of topic areas. All this is done with an emphasis on the joy of learning, the importance of play and creative expression. We do not just want our pupils to be able to read, write and do arithmetic, but to develop a passion for books, to enjoy recounting stories and solving problems.

Our qualified and experienced teachers continue to work with the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework in Reception. During Year 1 and Year 2, we follow the National Curriculum for England, Wales and Northern Ireland. This provides a robust academic framework and engaging breadth of study, as well as the flexibility to shape our curriculum to meet the interests and needs of our pupils. Within the curriculum, we embrace the international character of the school and select topics which appeal to pupils of all backgrounds and allow pupils to discover the many cultures of the world in which we live.

In Early Years, pupils participate in at least one lesson of English, German and mathematics every day. In addition, they explore topics in science, history, geography, art and music over the course of the week. Information technology is integrated into pupils’ learning, and pupils also follow a computing programme which develops familiarity with basic programming concepts.

We promote pupils’ physical development through our sports programme, as well as regular outdoor play. Furthermore, our personal, social and health programme allows pupils to investigate what it means to be healthy and encourages them to develop habits associated with a healthy lifestyle.

Our teaching supports and extends every child. Classroom assistants work alongside teachers to provide further individualised attention, and our support departments exist to care for those pupils with additional needs. Our English as an Additional Language department provides specialist teachers who work with those pupils who are still developing their skills in English, and our dedicated Special Educational Needs teachers work with those who need additional support in other areas.
