Primary School Transition Process

Following feedback from parents over the past year, we are trialling a new system for the transition process this year. We hope that it will provide more structure and allow parents to gain the information they need to help them feel prepared and comfortable for the next year of their child’s education.

Stage 1: Transition Meetings

The transition meetings will be held for every year group this year and they will be led by either the Head of Department or Assistant Head of Department. They will provide a brief overview of any structural changes to the year ahead such as the lessons taught each week, subjects for homework and daily schedule structure. This meeting will be of most help to parents who have not previously had a child in the year group concerned or have only been at St. George’s for a short period of time. All presentations and Q&As will be sent out to parents following the meetings.

The meetings will take place for each year group on the following days in the Primary Hall:

• Pre-Nursery to Nursery: Monday 19^th June, 15:30
• Nursery to Reception: Tuesday 20^th June, 15:30
• Reception to Year 1: Wednesday 21^st June, 15:30
• Year 1 to Year 2: Thursday 22^nd June, 15:30
• Year 2 to Year 3: Monday 26^th June, 15:30
• Year 3 to Year 4: Tuesday 27^th June, 15:40
• Year 4 to Year 5: Wednesday 28^th June, 15:40
• Year 5 to Year 6: Thursday 29^th June, 15:40

If you would like to attend one of the meetings, please go to the Main Office where you will be collected for the meeting.

Stage 2: Transition Day (Friday 7^th July)

This will provide an opportunity for pupils to experience elements of learning in the next year of their academic careers. In many cases, they will be able to meet their new class teacher and  teaching groups, although please note that these are subject to change. Full details will be provided nearer to the day.

Stage 3: Open Afternoon (Wednesday 30^th August)

The open afternoon will take place on Wednesday 30^th August from 12:00 - 15:00. It is an opportunity for you and your child to see the classroom and to meet the form teachers as well as the other children, parents and class representative.

Stage 4: Year Group Meetings (Dates TBC)

These meetings will take place in September 2017 and will be hosted by the year group teachers. They will provide an opportunity to find out more specific details regarding the curriculum for the year, the teacher expectations and projects and ideas that will take place during the year. It will also provide an opportunity to ask any final questions you may have about your child’s new year group. Supervision for the children will be provided for the times of the meetings.

We hope that this new transition structure will be positive for all the pupils and parents and will serve to allay any fears or concerns that you may have about the changes they will experience.
